Understanding Ovulation & Fertility

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. It typically happens once every menstrual cycle. The fertile window refers to the days in a woman's menstrual cycle when pregnancy is possible.

Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while an egg only survives for 12-24 hours after release. Therefore, your fertile window is the 5 days leading up to ovulation, plus the day of ovulation itself.

How it's calculated:

Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next period. For a standard 28-day cycle, this falls on Day 14. For a 32-day cycle, it falls on Day 18 (32 - 14 = 18).

Frequently Asked Questions

When am I most likely to get pregnant? +
You are most likely to get pregnant if you have intercourse on the day of ovulation or the two days prior. Having intercourse every 1-2 days during your entire 6-day fertile window maximizes your chances.
Can I ovulate right after my period? +
Yes, if you have a very short menstrual cycle (e.g., 21 days). Since ovulation happens roughly 14 days before the next period, a 21-day cycle means ovulation occurs around day 7. If your period lasts 5-6 days, you could ovulate right after it ends.
What are the signs of ovulation? +
Common signs include changes in cervical mucus (becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy like raw egg whites), a slight increase in basal body temperature (measured in the morning), mild pelvic ache or cramp (mittelschmerz), and increased sex drive.
